Just killing some free time on Stumbleupon and I found your entry. Not typically what I prefer to learn about, but it was certainly worth my time. Thanks.

Purong Taga Oas and AttyRic, your individual comments here are very telling of the level of intelligence you both possess, and the kind of people you are.

As I see it, there are Oasnons who care and who match that sentiment with action, there are Oasnons who care but choose not to do anything about it, there are Oasnons who don't care and maintain a hands-off/mouth shut attitude, and then there are those Oasnons who don't care and then have the audacity to act out. Sadly, I think you two belong to the latter group. You are a sad example of failed humanity.

If you can't be a partner in progress and good, I think you guys should just shut up and stay out of the way.

So you say I don't look good in photos. Who cares. That's all me- 100%. No airbush, no botox, no nothing. Besides, if my husband tells me I'm the best looking babe this side of town- who do I believe- you, or him?!! Haha!!

I wouldn't call anyone's opinion as worthless. Everyone's opinion counts- and yours is as good as mine.
You are expressing the sentiment of someone who lives in a country that is less than free, where people's lives are not respected and where morality and values are only word-of-mouth, not of deed.

Sure, there's disappointment. And why not? Look around you and tell everyone you don't see cause for disappointment. It's all right in front of your nose. There is much to be desired in your society.

Who are you going to sue? I don't know. You figure that out. You guys are the ones who have to live with what you have to live with. But if you think what happened was purely nature's doing, then your mind is just pitifully simple. Or maybe you're just blocking things off because, honestly, your problems there are so huge and complex and daunting, it's hard to absorb.

One thing I can tell you. It pains me to see photos of Filipinos suffering the way they do. When I see an old lady weeping from the devastation of the flood, that's my mother. When I see a child who's hungry or has to dig into a garbage pile for food, that's my own. It hurts to see so much suffering, and it hurts even more to see the apathy and disregard that is so prevalent in your country.

The Philippines is overwhelmingly Catholic, sadly, I don't see much of that in display in the way many people live back there. When people abuse another, when someone disregards the needs and rights of another, when someone sees suffering and pain and turns away... that is not the Catholic way.

I feel for you guys. I honestly do.

Lots of talks, few actions. So, how are gonna pursue this? Who are you going to sue? Please be realistic and don't just make up things for the sake expressing disappointments. This is not the time for blaiming. This is a disaster that nobody wants. Keep the worthless opinion to yourself.

indeed, A. Nobody is very appropriate to your name. with your outlook in life and with a belief that borders in "agnostic existentialism", still, your secular mind is short of the many issues that beset humanity.

you are indeed confused to the brink of hopeless in your "quest for truth". maybe your philosophers got you more confused than enlightened you as they were in their dark ages of disillusion. they became more irrational than rational and ended up secular humanists and yet nonetheless left that perrenial question about man & God unresolved, even up to this point.
the hell with kierkegaard and even hume who does not even know how to perceive reality.
your philosophies have deviated you too much from the issue of the blog. remember, "there are more things in heaven & earth than you can dream of in your philosophies".

Darn. You sound so hopeless!

My thoughts are my own alone. I don't rely on anyone's inputs, don't care about any philosopher who came and went before my time. I say something because I feel it is my right to speak my mind. And I speak from my heart.

I don't bring God into this equation, because the ugliness that we see around us is something that man made and brought upon himself. God gave us all the capacity we need to live a life that is true, that is worthwhile, that is beautiful and that is atune with his goodness. If man chooses a path that is counter to that, that is his choice and his own alone. Eventually, man will be answerable to his own action- whether here (look at the devastation of the flood- man had a big input to that devastation) or in the after-life. But whether now or later, it will come. There are always consequences to every man's action.

Unlike you, I do not see things as being hopeless. If I live my life the way God would like me to do, and if you will do the same, then the ripple effect of me and you could touch on others and bring on the change we all want to see... a more caring and just world.

I'd rather do my own share, than wait for another to bring it on. After all, it's got to start from somewhere... so why not with me?

Love... love of oneself and others... I think you've got to start with this.

A. Nobody [Visitor]
It's an age old quest, this need to understand why the ugliness and iniquity of poverty and suffering persists especially amidst "so much plenty". From the time of the ancient philosophers such as Plato down to the modern ones like Rawls and Derrida, this urging to "redress" injustice" never fails to stir the deepest emotions. Some blame God for such imperfect state of affairs; others flee to the mountains in order to wage their own revolutions against any existing order. Others just turn dead to the world, convinced that there is little that one can do to resolve this problem. This author "weeps" that many don't seem to register any kind of emotion, for or against.

It is a useless quest. For so long as man remains imprisoned by the evolutionary demons that shaped his unconbscious, he will never be able to surmount this problem. The best
explanation that comes from the thinking mind is still Hume's: "The rules of morality are not the conclusions of our reason". It is man's utter conceit to believe that his best sentiments are enough to solve these problems that are beyond his abilities to even comprehend; his efforts to do so make things worse; the road to hell is paved, not just with good intentions, but mistakes in trying to enforce them.
Perhaps Kierkegaard and Camus were right - just come up with your own idea of how to live life well and let evil take care of itself.

As to why God allows these things to happen, wouldn't the idea that He does not really care, be a much more accurate explanation? After centuries of looking desperately for salvation from theology, isn't anthropology the more helpful path?
